They’re scratching.

It’s raining and I can’t say I don’t like it🙂 To be honest, we’ve had way to much rain this year but since it melts away all ths now and Ice at least it does some use this time🙂

I love fireworks but I’m glad I live in an area where it is forbidden. With all the cattle going out all year fireworks could do big damage, not with the cattle but with the area if the cattle would panic🙂 Hector was never afraid of it as young but he’s become more and more afraid of it with age. We will still hear the bangs from a distance and that will worry him but I think he won’t panic anyway.

I’ve already been to the super market so now I’ll have enough food for the rest of the week. But I’ll have to call the vet on Wednesday morning, there’s a risk that all dogs have gotten fox scabies. Not that they scratch themselves all the time but often enough to show something is wrong. There can be lots of reasons for this, like something called dandruff mites but so far it’s only Orvar that has lots of dandruff.

Yesterday was much nicer.

Fox scabies isn’t dangerous in itself really but wild animals scratch themselves so hard that the skin breaks and infections gets in to their bodies. Now days its quite easy to cure, two shots, ten days apart and it’s over. The vets office wasn’t open today so that’s why we haven’t gone there now and they don’t suffer even if it does itch every now and again.

It’s time for a nap before we go on another walk again. I can’t say I enjoy our walks in rainy weather but it’s better than windy days below 0C (32F)🙂

Have a great ending of this year!

  1. sorry to hear the dogs are itchy, hope it goes away soon, I have never heard of this condition, fox scabies,
have a good new years eve, best wishes from Canada.

    • Hi Laurie!

Well this happens every now and again, it comes and goes between the foxes. No big problem any longer though if it is a dog that catches it but for the fox it means the end and a painful one too.

Have a great new years eve!
      Christer.

      Christer.

  3. Hi Christer,
Sorry to hear the dogs are scratching. If you can get some hydrogen peroxide, try putting that on the itchy areas. It won’t cure the scabies but it might keep the itching down and prevent any skin irritation and infection.
Sune looks like he’s having great fun in the rain. Four furry dogs all wet from the rain is something I don’t want to consider, though. I would need a special room with multiple hair dryers or heat lamps where the dogs can get down to an acceptable level of dampness before they came in the rest of the house.😀
The sun is not awake enough to tell me whether it will be shining today. Maybe.
Lovely photos today. My favorite is the shot of the road that is right after the cattle picture. Sparkly rain drops all over!🙂
Have a good New Year’s Eve.

    • Hi Caryn!

I do have hydrogen peroxide but I would have to bathe my dogs in it then🙂🙂🙂 It isn’t that bad yet so they’ll do fine until we can go to the vet but it is bad enough so that I understand that something is wrong.

Sune seems to have great fun no matter what weather we’re having🙂🙂🙂

Nova have the perfect fur for this weather, short and it dries up quickly, Hector and Orvar have an oily fur so the water usually never sticks that good to it but sune seems to have a fur that works like a spunge🙂🙂🙂

I like either that or the cattle photo best.

Have a great new years eve!
      Christer.

  4. haha…little spongy sune! sure looks like he is having fun! snow is on the way and i am so excited! there will be fireworks right in front of my house. they don’t bother teddy, she is used to them. i could do without them. i will be in bed way before midnight! happy new year christer! joyce

    • Hi Joyce!

Sune is always happy, no matter what weather🙂 I should be more like him I think🙂

Hector is the first dog that is afraid, none of the others have never been bothered by it🙂

      I won’t be up either🙂 I’m to much of a morning person for that🙂

More snow🙂🙂 I’m glad that winter finally arrived🙂

Have a good ending of this year and a good new one!
      Christer.

  5. I wish it was raining here! It is -36 celcius with the wind this morning. Typical winter day on the Canadian prairies unfortunately! We too have one dog who is fearful of fireworks, so he will be kept indoors tonight. He is a husky who prefers to be outside but not when there are fireworks. Your pictures are just great! Happy New Year Christer!

    • Hi Dianna!

Northern Sweden had those temperatures before Christmas but we never got here down south and for that I’m happy🙂

Both Orvar and Hector would love to stay outdoors in those low temperatures, they are a big par New Foundland🙂 But I think I would be reported to the police if I allowed them to🙂🙂🙂 They think anything aboive 10C is tropical🙂🙂🙂

Have a great end of this year and a good new one!
      Christer.

  6. Now you have done it Olaf! All your pictures of snow and now we have it! All the plants are now covered and the mountain behind our home is totally white. Beautiful! Sorry about the dogs and it scratchy stuff. We have cats but they have to stay inside or they would become coyote food in a heartbeat. We have a path behind our home that is called coyote trail and we see coyotes on it frequently.

    • Hi JD!

I happily share all the snow I can since I don’t want it🙂🙂🙂 But I have to admit that it is beautiful🙂

Fox scabies isn’t any big problem any longer, it has been though. So it’ll be over as soon as we’ve met the vet.
We don’t have coyotes here and most foxes avoids cats since they have a tendency to defend for themselves🙂🙂🙂 Thankfully cats can’t get fox scabies.
But the occasional wolf passes by sometimes, I have never seen one but I’ve heard one howl out on the bog beside my cottage🙂

Have a good ending of this year and a good new one!
      Christer.

      Christer.

  8. Christer, wonderful photos, I can’t believe how all the snow is gone. Itchy dogs, poor things, hope it is not the fox scabies. Wishing you and your sweet family a happy, healthy, safe 2013!!

    • Hi Robin!

I think almost all snow will be gone by tomorrow afternoon, it is raining and it’s really warm now🙂 It can freeze after it’s gone again🙂

I think it is fox scabies but that’s no bigger problem any longer, only for foxes that can’t get those shots.

Have a good ending of this year and a good new year!
      Christer.

  9. As usual, the pups seem to be enjoying the walks! Sorry to hear that they are scratching, but you are aware of it so everything will be fixed soon!

    Happy New Year, my friend!

    • Hi Jim!

      They do love those walks🙂

It will be fixed as soon as we get to the vet :-)Thankfully it doesn’t move to humans🙂

Have a good end of this year and a good new one!
      Christer.

  10. I guess if fox scabies can be easily treated, then that’s better than something like fleas.
And the weather is much too cold for fleas.
I know that at least the neighbors next door will be setting off fireworks…and probably the people across the street. I hate being such a fuddy duddy but if frightens some of my dogs. Once one starts barking, they all bark and that means no sleep for me until at least after midnight.
My favorite photo today are all the ones of Sune playing!
    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Hi Cindi!

I’ve only heard about one case with fleas here, it seems to be rather rare up here in the north. So I really hope it isn’t fleas🙂

I guess no one told our new neighbors about not having fireworks but I guess they’ll know from now on🙂🙂🙂 It was short lived though so I hope they don’t yell at them to much.

      Have a good new year!

      Christer.
