What do I need, instead of what do I want.

One snowflake.

One snowflake.

Yesterday while I was a bit bored I took a look on for how much longer my internet subscription lasted and I found out it ends now in May. Of course I have to notice my company three months ahead if I want to terminate it so I’m planning on ending it in August. I’m not quitting the internet πŸ™‚ But I’ve never really liked the lap top I’m having right now. The first thing it did when I started it for the first time was to tell me it was broken and that a self repair program was trying to fix it again πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

It has also started to behave like it is senile, it asks me the same question on and on and on, like do You want to save these photographs in Windows Live Photo gallery. I say yeas and I also mark the little square that says don’t ask me this again. It does however ask me that same question every time I open up that program πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I bought it via my telephone/ internet company and that is a mistake I won’t do again. They take absolutely no responsibility over what they sell.

So I’ll buy something new this summer with an internet subscription but from a store this time, the question is what should I buy? Do I need a laptop? or a big computer? or is it enough with anything like an Ipad? I really want a Mac though πŸ™‚ But no matter what kind I’m looking at its bloody expensive! Twice or three times more than the other brands and I’m not sure it’s worth it.

Perhaps it’s enough with an Ipad or something similar but from Samsung? But I’ve understood that there’s no usb gate on those and then I still need a computer to download my photographs. Since this one seems to become more and more senile I really can’t trust it for much longer πŸ™‚ But then again, I only use my laptop to write my blog, pay my bills and a few other things so I really don’t need anything big and cool πŸ™‚Β So what do You say, what is the best alternative? I do like my big screen on this laptop and an Ipad isn’t even close in size, but then again, I hardly use even 10% of my laptops capacity πŸ™‚

Yesterday it snowed all day and most photographs shown today comes from yesterday. Today it was sunny but bitterly cold. Last night we had -17 C (1,4 F) and this morning it was -15 C (5 F) Β and it will continue like that for some time they say. March can be a really nasty month here. But the fire is burning in the stove and the heat is spreading in my little cottage πŸ™‚ I’m much better now so I went to work today but I’m more or less living on sour milk still πŸ™‚

    • Hi Joyce!

It still is winter πŸ™‚ and we’ll have it for at least ten more days they say. I don’t mind that much as long as the sun is shining but hate it when it snows and it will snow again soon.

I’m leaning towards a laptop since there’s no usb gate on an Ipad.

      Have a great day!

  1. Hi Christer,
I’m glad to read that you are feeling a bit better.
I have a Mac laptop and I think it was worth every penny I paid for it. It probably was 2 or 3 times as expensive as a PC laptop would have been. I decided to get one because I was going to be retired and wouldn’t have the kind of access to IT techs that I had at work. I needed something that was just going to do what it was supposed to do without a lot of hassle and Macs do that. It took a little adjustment to get used to the Mac operating system but now it’s a breeze. Love my Mac.
I’m not really sure what you mean by internet subscription. My internet comes from my cable tv provider. I signed up for it and it stays until I say I don’t want it anymore. The cable company doesn’t sell computers, though. I’m think I would not buy one from them, if they did. πŸ™‚
Yesterday was a lovely, sunny spring day. Rocky and I were outside all day long. Today is not so lovely. Mostly cloudy, very windy and cold. Back to wintery stuff, I guess.
    Enjoy the evening.

    • Hi Caryn!

I feel much better now but perhaps a bit tired but what else is to expect after a stomach flu πŸ™‚

That’s the reason I want a Mac but still, the cheapest costs almost two thirds of what I have left after taxes after a months work πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ But less problems do mean less costs too to be honest. Most people that have a Mac do love it πŸ™‚ I’ve never heard the same about people having a PC πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

When one buy a computer via the phone/ intyernet comapny one also start a subscription, that way the computer gets cheaper in the long run. I can also do the same when buying it from a store and the subscription usually lasts for one and a half to two years. After that one can change internet company without any problems. Most people I know do that way. I must do it that way if I want a Mac.It’s just too much money for something I really don’t need, I can still survive without a computer πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ We don’t have cable tv out here in the middle of nowhere, it’s either sattelite dish or via antenna and a special digital box if one wants more channels than the free ones.

Sunny once again and so cold this morning that my car behaved strangely πŸ™‚

      Have a great day!

  2. such beautiful photos , the light is lovely, kind of blue, they all look so happy, even the deer!!
We have a desk top computer with and extra large screen and a lap top, our second lap top.Our first laptop was an HP model, and it lasted one and half years, the screen went first then it died completely. We spent 160 dollars on repairs and it still was no good.We then bought a Toshiba, we like it but maybe if we had spent the money on the apple we would have had no trouble, its just that the apple is so expensive! Hard to put that much out! My children have Ipads and love them, fancy smancy things but too small for my dimming vision. I am no help at advice, sorry
Good to hear you are well, minus 20 Celsius here last night YUK!!!

    • Hi Laurie!

Yes we still have that blue light and I guess it will stay as long as we have snow here. Personally I don’t like it at all πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

I have an HP and it wasn’t good in the beginning and it’s acting more and more strange now πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Yes Apple is expensive! But I guess that it is cheap in the long run since they seem to break down rarely.

I don’t like the small screen on the ipads either, I want a big screen.

Minus 20 here this morning too and my car really didn’t like it πŸ™‚

      Have a great day!

  3. Hi Christer – Stay away from the sour milk if you want to avoid another stomach problem. Hopefully you are kidding about living on sour milk. Todays’ photos were great – I loved the little grey and orange (finch, sparrow?) bird as well of the yellow ones.

I have several friends who bought ipads or tablets when they came first came out. They all ended up selling them because they found you could not many of the things you can on a computer. They might be fine for someone who drives around for their job, but it doesn’t sound like they are great as your only web device.
I found that I had to do quite a bit of research online to narrow down my choices to a couple of brands & models. I looked in stores a few times and then went to objective review sites like PC Talk or other techy reviewers to see what they had to sat about the Brand & specific model number. You can go by just the brand because each model is very different in quality and pros/cons. You need to consider what your primary use will be. If it is photos you need a screen large enough to what you are doing (esp. as we age). I love my laptop which is an HP Pavillion which is great for photos, movies & any kind of entertainment. The 1st one I bought 3 yrs. ago was about $1,200 USD. The damn thing crapped out after a year with a dead motherboard. By that time the cost had dropped byover 50% and had twice the memory, storage and all kinds of great advances. When I asked why the price had dropped so quickly they said it was because the companies had stopped selling them with mostly useless softeare loaded on them. Things like games, cookbooks, but also Photoshop, Elements and other higher costs programs. So now the hardware is cheaper and software is bought seperately at higher price. If you don’t want things like Blue Ray disc drive or specialty parts you can get a 15″ laptop here for under $500 on sale now. HP, Samsung (can’t remember the 3rd) were rated as the top laptop manufacturers when I bought last year. People I know who have Macs have always loved them. I don;t know enough about Macs to comment.

If money were no object, I would have a large monitor to hook in to the laptop so watching Nexflix movies and other things I would like to see on a larger scale. The HD on mine has really sharp images and very accurate color. Some brands look great until you see the monitors side by side. When my older TV dies I want to get one that I can also use as a monitor for the laptop.

So do some research online, go to a large store to see them in person, narrow choices to 2 or 3 brands, look at consumer & tech reviews, compare the specific models by looking them up online per model#, pick the model you intend to buy & find the best price you can online. Here, even if they have a model in the stores to look at, they have to order it to be delivered to you by mail. I don’t believe any US internet service providers are in the business of selling computers. Most of us buy our internet service through cable companies that provide phone, TV & internet services. Also look online for Promo codes or additional discounts when you do make the purchase.
Sorry this was so long, but I know how confusing selecting a computer can get. Hope this helps.

    • Hi Ellen!

This is the promised land of sour milk πŸ™‚ I don’t know how many varieties we have and we love it πŸ™‚ Some even have sour milk with straw berries in summer, I’ve never tried it but I think I would love it πŸ™‚ Sour milk is often recommended when one has stomach problems here. I’ve read somewhere that Scandinavians are the ones eating most products like that in the whole world since very few of us get any problems by eating/ drinking milk products. So no I wasn’t kidding but I’ve eaten dinner and breakfast without any problems today so there will be less sour milk from now on even if I love it πŸ™‚

Thankfully I’m in no hurry so I will do just what Your recommending. I really only use my computer when posting a blog, paying my bills and things like Facebook and my photographs of course even if I rarely save them after using them in my blogs. I know that Mac’s are the best when it comes to editing photographs but I rarely edit my photographs so that’s really not something I need. But one can never trust those using Mac’s, they worship their computers πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I tghink they see Apple as some kind of deity πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Over here the three or four biggest internet comapnies also sells computers but as I said they don’t take any responsibility as soon as the computer is delivered even if they must.

It did help a lot πŸ™‚

      Have a great day!

  4. Hi Christer, computer buying decisions are always difficult. I have an iPad and really like it, but it is not used for blogging or doing anything useful. I enjoy watching Netflix in bed and reading the news online and also emails. I have a desktop HP and it is what I use for blogging because I can use Windows Live Writer to compose blog posts. I also have a MacBook Air which w bought last year to replace a Toshiba notebook which I sold as it had outlived it’s usefulness. The Mac is my travelling computer and bought for it’s compact size and weight. yes it was costly, but bought online from Apple as a refurbished model which saved a little and you still get the standard 1 year warranty. Not all PC makes who sell refurbished models will give a year warranty, instead they may only give 90 days. Since I am a long time Windows user, I do get confused using the Mac, but one day I plan to get a Mac desktop so it’s a learning process.
I didn’t understand your Internet subscription as we get out Internet service through our telephone provider, which does not sell computers.
Glad yiu are feeling better, despite getting more snow which you dislike.

    • Hi Beatrice!

I have decided that I won’t buy an Ipad or anything like it, they are just too small still and then it’s the problem with my photographs. I still would need a computer to download them in to.

I’m looking at different sites like the Pawn shop intenet site to see if I can get a Mac cheaper that way. Still no luck I’m afraid, even there the price get sky high πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Yes Mac is a bit different than any PC and it would probably drive me mad in the beginning πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

If we buy a computer via the Telephone/ internet comapny we’ll get it a bit cheaper but then we have to stay /subscribe the internet service from them for around one and a half to twoo years. We can buy it from a store too in the same way if we like to. The best is of course always to buy it without any subscription and after that chose what comapny one wants for the internet service.

Thankfully it’s mostly sunny now but more snow is on its way.

      Have a great day!

  5. I can not help you one little bit about computers. I have a laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520). I certainly wouldn’t mind a larger screen.
Glad you were able to make it back to work. Try to keep well, okay?!
Cute dog photos, and cute Bertil photos. Always love a dose of Bertil.

    • Hi Robin!

I do want a big screen so an ipad is most probvably out of the question. Thankfully I still have lots of time before I have to decide anything πŸ™‚ But my computer is acting stranger and stranger now πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

I will try to stay away from all diseases from now on, I am a bit tired of them now πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Everyone love Bertil and it’s only because You don’t know him πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

      Have a great day!

  6. Christer,
I have an iPad which I use for games and for reading books. I bought it so when I travel I can take do much to read and do. It also has wifi but it is definitely limited by no usb ports. My desktop died, and I haven’t gotten it fixed because I have a MAC laptop which I really like. Eventually I’ll get another computer, but I’m still content with my Mac. It takes a bit to get used to but it is really east to use.

    • Hi Kat!

An ipad is perfect to bring on travels! All those books one can bring along, I can just imagine how big the luggage would be if one actually brought real books πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

I’m leaning towards a Mac book but as long this computer still works there’s no hurry to buy one. Computers might become cheaper now because we have deflation here at the moment and it looks like it will stay for quite some time.

      Have a great day!

  7. I got a laptop a year or so ago and love it. I got a Toshiba and (knock on wood) have had no problems. I only paid $500 – $600 for it? I can’t remember that exact amount but I got it from…Walmart and I HATE Walmart but I searched on line and found the same computer at Walmart for much cheaper and I ordered it and and had it shipped to the store. A friend of mine has one and she keeps burning hers out. BUT she sits with it on her lap and lets it get too hot.
I always have mine on my desk and never let anything block the side where it vents to keep it cool. Anyway, God, I can’t believe I’m telling you Walmart, do you have a Walmart in Sweden? Maybe they are like McDonalds and are everywhere?
I get my wireless internet through my phone company although I have no landline. Just the Internet and if you tell them about cable companies and different places offering you all these deals, usually you can get them to offer you a deal too. Good Luck!

    • Hi Cindi!
You’re doing it right! No matter what they call our laptops they never should be placed on our laps. I’m doing exactly like You are and I even have placed it a bit higher in the back so that the air can flow without any problems. One can buy a cold pad to place under the laptop and that is said to make the computer live longer.

No we don’t have Walmart here but I have read about it and I can’t say I like it! We have German store chains instead just as or even worse than Walmart. But most of us don’t buy anything there, we strongly believe that anyone should have the right to join the union and to have full time work if they want to, something these chains really don’t like. They are actually so nasty that I can’t understand that anyone wants to work there. But I guess having a job after all is better than not having one.

I have wireless internet and it works fine, as long as my computer allows it too πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

      Have a great day!
