And there it was.

The night was even colder than last night but as soon as the sun rose it warmed up quickly. At least it got warm where the sun reached, there was still ice on my pond at noon.  As usual on a Sunday morning we started walking in to the village and after a while I thought it would be fun to see if I could find the old grave yard by the church ruins.

I didn’t have high hopes because they abandoned the church in the 17th century and they didn’t return until 100 years later when they used the stones from that church to build the new one closer to the lake. It doesn’t seem to be anyone that knows why they abandoned that church but there’s theory that the village had been hit by the plague so often that they thought it must come from the plague victims buried by the church.

It’s strange but the ruins, or piles of stones as it actually is, is marked as an archaeological relic but there’s no sign with any kind of info there. I looked after something that could be grave stones but had no luck. But while we were walking around in the forest I came to think about a small lake (not the smaller lake I mention sometimes, this is a third lake) that is somewhere close to the ruins. I’ve seen it on maps but it can’t be seen from any roads going nearby. So why not search for it?

There is a sort of road that deforestation machines has done long ago so we followed it towards the place I thought the lake must be at. The forest there looks much like it did here when I bought this cottage, big spruces all over the place. Spring flowers flowered on spots where the sun reached the ground and I could hear lots of geese and trumpet swans just nearby. This, like the entire village, is a bird protection area so I didn’t want to get too close to the lake if we found it. But I could see a mire like area between the tree trunks and lots of pines further away.

Once there were lots of cottages in this village but most of them were allowed to fall appart when people moved away. This one still stands but just barely.

The cottage had a beautiful view though.

I thought the pines would be in the way but continued for a while anyway and there it was! A small forest lake. It was impossible to walk quietly due to lots of old and dry twigs and branches on the ground, so all birds had left when we arrived 🙂 I took a few photographs and started to walk homewards again because there was almost no power in the battery any longer 🙂 I did however see one trumpet swan gliding over the lake before we left.

Not all parts of the road was as good as this one :-)

We were out for almost two hours and that was a bit too much for Hector. We went out for another walk around noon and I could see that his legs ached, so I’ve decided not to take any more walks today so he can rest properly until tomorrows afternoon walk instead. He gets the idea that he can run like when he was young when he has gotten his medicine and he always has to pay for it later on. The other dogs can run around in the garden, I’ll just have to keep an eye on Sune so he doesn’t run over to my neighbor and steal something again 🙂

Suddenly! There it was, the small lake.

It's rather thin but fairly long. Perhaps pond is a better name for it :-)

  1. Hi Christer,
Well, the little Spawn is at least cute. Love the big ears. He looks like a cross between our red spawns and grey spawns. If he was very rude to you, that would be more like our red spawns. They’re little but mean. A bit like Bertil perhaps. 😀
The cattle looked like they thought you had something for them. Did they follow you along the fence line?

Is that forest lake a natural one or man-made? One of my favorite places to ride my horse was on the paths in two state parks that were connected. All through those parks one could find small ponds that had all kinds of wildlife in and around them. The ponds were not natural. They were fire ponds that had been dug many, many years ago so that, if there were a fire in the forest, the firefighters would have nearby sources of water to help put the fire out.

It’s sunny but a bit chilly out this morning. It’s supposed to get up into the low 50’s today. We shall see. I feel the need for a visit to my favorite ice cream stand so maybe Rocky and I will take a ride later on today.
Enjoy the rest of your day.

    • Hi Caryn!

I wonder if we have the same species on both sides of the ocean? Ours are much more shy than the ones You have 🙂

At least it could have shown it’s dislike before we had passed it, not after 🙂

We walked by just before they were supposed to get their food, so I guess they thought I might have it somewhere 🙂

I’m pretty sure it’s a made one, there were only open fields here fifty years ago and the forest that would be natural here would be a mix with oak, birch, beech and smaller bushes and shrubs. Perhaps the odd pine or spruce would grow here as well. This area has unusually few lakes and ponds, if I had lived just a couple of miles south I would have at least four times as many lakes and ponds around me. But we have the two biggest lakes in the country nearby so I guess that evens it up -) There were lots of fire ponds close to where I lived in Gothenburg and the wild life that wasn’t shy at all could entertain us all day without getting boring 🙂

It’s a truly wonderful day here, we reached almost 60F 🙂

      Have a great day!
      Christer.

  2. Hi Christer! Your pictures are absolutely stunning! You live in a very beautiful part of the world and it looks very magickal! Thank you for sharing. As I type this, it is snowing. I do not think we are ever going to get spring at this rate. I think I might go to the garden center today just to get a bit of spring in my blood! Enjoy your day! Dianna

    • Hi Dianna!

I’m glad You like them 🙂 But I tend to not photograph the less beautiful places 🙂 Like where they have cut down all the trees and things like that 🙂

We’ve been lucky so far, no snow yet 🙂 But I’ve been standing in heavy snowfall on June 6th once even if that’s rare even for us up here in the north 🙂

Have a great day and I hope You’ll get spring soon!
      Christer.

  3. hi christer! my birds and squirrels scream at us when we go down to the lower gardens. we are intruding in their space. they scream until we leave. i don’t even know what kind of birds they are. joyce

    • Hi Joyce!

They normally never make a sound here so I don’t understand why it started protesting when we already had passed it 🙂 None of us even knew it was there 🙂 I’m lousy in telling what most birds are to be honest, I know the most comkon but thats it 🙂

      Have a great day!
      Christer.

      Christer.

  5. Christer,
I love today’s pictures. Of course, not to say I don’t love them other days but today’s especially. The falling down house, the lake, the reds of the barns and the frost on the ground. Gracie would have loved the walk with you, but she’d need to be haltered as she a runaway when she gets the chance. She always wears a halter when she walks as she can sometimes get out of her collar. That rabbit would have had her off like a shot.

It has been cold the last few nights. Today will get into the 50’s. My sister in Colorado has had two major snowstorms and last week it got down to 5Ëš. Spring is late.

    Happy Earth Day!!

    • Hi Kat!

I’ll walk to that house wothout my dogs one day so I can get some photographs on the other side as well. I suspect there’s lost of broken glass and rusty nails and that’s never a good combination with wild dogs 🙂

I’ve never had to worry about Orvar and Hector chsing anything thankfully, but Nova and Sune! Well Sune stops almost as soon as he hear me call for him but loves to sneak away in the same direction again 🙂 🙂 🙂 But He seems to ademire Orvar so I hope he’ll follow in his steps 🙂

Tonight it was fairly warm again, at least above 32F and it’s cloudy so I hope it will be the same again tonight.

      Happy Earth Day!
      Christer.

    • Hi Cindi!

But he’s always happy and he wanted to follow us on that walk no matter what 🙂

No, not really. I always get lost when being out walking to be honest 🙂 🙂 🙂 But it’s fairly close to roads in the area if I should get totally lost 🙂

      Have a great day!
      Christer.
