Sometimes I wonder.

The morning was anything but pleasant even if the sun did shine from time to time. The afternoon has been very pleasant despite that clouds cover the sun every now and again. We’ll get Super heat later in the week, They’re getting even worse now days when describing weather, super heat means something around 25C (77F). That is rather warm for us but come on, that’s no super heat 🙂 🙂 🙂 It would have been so easy to just write summer temperatures because that is what we usually get as warmest during summer. Mostly its cooler and it rains a lot.

I’ve realized how much wind those two spruces my neighbor cut down stopped ever reaching my garden, so I bought three Thuja’s the other week. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the species that becomes biggest and grows fastest but these will do (Thuja occidentalis). They won’t be stopping any wind for a couple of years though, trees don’t grow that fast here.

My newest neighbor has started cutting in the apple trees he has in the garden, I do hope this isn’t pruning but cutting them down bit by bit because if it is pruning it’s really bad work and the trees won’t last for many more years anyway. He’s doing it all wrong and it’s a sloppy job, if this is pruning which I’m afraid that it is. The thing is that didn’t need to be pruned at all. Sometimes I wonder why people who hates everything growing (but grass) moves to a house with a garden? Why just not get an appartement in the city close to a park? They tend to say they love nature but really! If they did they should understand that gardens are a piece of the nature too.

It’s time to feed all the animals and then a short walk before doing my laundry. Tomorrow it’s back to work again and to make that call to the vet.

Have a great day!

I hope he's just taking it down piece by piece. Otherwise I think this is the worst pruning I've ever seen, this is tree mutelation.

  1. Hi Christer,
Definitely mutilation. It looks like he’s taking it down bit by bit, though. They look like rather old apple trees anyway.

I’m pruning a black walnut sapling that is growing a little too close to the house. It’s 8 feet tall and growing close to the cement wall so the choice is chop it down or leave it. It will give needed shade if I leave it there. I’m encouraging it to grow branches that go up or to the left or right but not towards the house. So far it is paying attention and has got a lovely long main leader that is growing in just the perfect direction. There are a couple of lower branches that I will take off later on when the tree is older because they are too close to the ground and mowing will be hard.

I think urban man has an atavistic need to clear the land. All those fairly stories about conquering unicorns, dragons and giants are really about taming the wilderness and making it safe for people. The first thing the Europeans did when they came to this continent was to clear away all the trees that hid the dangerous animals and Natives and turn the wood into houses and forts.

It’s raining here today. It was supposed to do that yesterday and be sunny today. They were a day off in their predictions. Rocky and I went to the lake and I took the photographs that I should have taken yesterday but didn’t because I couldn’t be bothered to bring the camera. There are 6 swans on the lake. Today I got shots of them all together and sleeping. It was lovely and serene. Then Rocky ran away toward Main Street and would not come when called. All my yelling woke up the swans. They swam to the other end of the lake, giving me grumpy and disgusted looks over their wings as they paddled away. Can’t say I blame them. 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your day.

    • Hi Caryn!

I sort of hope that he’s taking them down bit by bit 🙂 I was about to ask him what he was doing when Sune pooped on his property in front of him 🙂 So I thought it could wait 🙂 🙂 🙂

One must prune or cut down trees that can damage the house and branches growing so low that it’s hard to mow must be removed as well. But I can’t understand why the first thing they do when moving in is to remove anything that isn’t grass, wouldn’t it be better to just live in a flat then? He also cut down the hedge so now he will have no privacy or protection towards the wind 🙂 🙂 🙂 The cottage is so close to the road that it’s possible to see the entire home while passing 🙂 But at least no wilderness can do anything without him seeing it 🙂 🙂 🙂

Isn’t it nice when our dogs just doesn’t care that we shout to them 🙂 🙂 🙂 I don’t know how many wild animals I’ve seen panicing when I have had to shout after Nova or Sune 🙂 🙂 🙂 Sune was impossible on one walk today and had to be leashed for quite some time 🙂

      Have a great day!

      • I’m a back to nature girl, myself. I only mow the grass right around the house and in the open lot next to the driveway. The rest of the acre of land has gone back to the wild. That little black walnut really is too close to the house because the squirrels planted it. I can’t bring myself to cut it out, though because I do need a tree over there and there isn’t much room for one unless my neighbor wants it on his property. He would rather have his arbor vita which don’t give me any shade at all.

      • My garden is so small that I might as well mow it all 🙂 But I’m planting trees and bushes all over it so I won’t have to mow any lawn in the future 🙂 Lots of hiding places for my dogs when I’m finished with all that tree and bush planting 🙂 🙂 🙂

  2. we are having wonderful cool weather here today and teddy and i are loving it. one more cool day and then back to sunny and hot. wow….that sure is a hatchet job on the apple trees! i wonder what he is thinking. my big thuja green giants died though the small ones are doing very well. i need something along my fence where they died for privacy. i am trying to figure out something that grows in the shade? enjoy your good weather christer! joyce

    • Hi Joyce!

You would love to live in this country, it’s almost never hot here 🙂 But then again, we have loads of insects instead 🙂

I was about to ask him when Sune pooped just in front of him at his property, so I thought it could wait a while 🙂

I’ll take a look if I can find anything that likes growing in shadow and still be big enough to give privacy.

      Have a great day!

  3. it always seems so sad to me when people cut trees down, if they are dead that is one thing but its injustice to Mother Nature to cut healthy trees down.We have had apple trees that appeared on deaths door produce apples for years and years, I hope nova makes out OK,

    • Hi Laurie!

I have no idea why he’s doing like this, they sure weren’t dying. We have a couple of apple trees at work that looks like they are dead but still flowers every year and gives delicious apples 🙂 I was about to ask him but then Sune pooped on his property in front of him so I thought it best to wait 🙂

I hope Nova only hit her back lightly but we’ll know better later this week.

      Have a great day!

  5. That does seem like rather severe pruning, Christer, even worse than I have done to our crepe myrtles, but then never managed to kill them because they keep coming back. Weekends go way too fast it seems. Hope you are able to find out the cause of Nova’s problem.

    • Hi Beatrice!

That’s no pruning, it’s mutilation 🙂 These trees are old so this is something they can’t take. Crepe myrtel and Lilacs are trees that can take anything because they behave like weeds 🙂 🙂 🙂

Yes even three day weekends pass way to quickly.

      Have a great day!
