It didn’t get as cold as I had feared.
You should have seen the full moon I saw on my way to work yesterday morning just before it went down behind the horizon. It was huge and blood red. This one isn’t too bad either 🙂
It was -4C (24,8F) already at 9 pm yesterday ao I thought it would be nasty cold here this morning but clouds had drifted in and saved the night by making it warmer. Still frost though but just beneath 0C (32F). I thought I would see lots of frost covered plants but the only thing covered with frost was my car and gravel on the road. I guess it’s too dry here at the moment to make frost.
My camera with the tele-photo lens is too heavy for my tripod so the camera moved when I touched the trigger button. I wanted a steady photo of this rather bright “star”,
But this my friends isn’t a star, it’s Jupiter. I’ll try the small camera next time I get a chanse and I’ll used the moode where I can decide for how long the shutter should stay open. If I’m lucky it will actually look like Jupiter the next time I’ll show it here 🙂 I might even be able to focus properly 🙂
Some day I’ll even remember to put a candle in the lamp 🙂
Still, it was cold enough to make my hands cold, because naturally I didn’t bring my hunters gloves. No I’m not a hunter but those gloves are perfect because they are both mittens and gloves. They are sort of gloves with a mitten cap over that can be pulled of if You understand how I mean 🙂 It won’t stay cold for long though, it’ll turn already on Tuesday they say.
I was trying to find thistle seeds on-line since a bird called Steglits (European Goldfinch) loves them and they are always nice to see by the feeders. It turns out I can get 50 kg (110 pounds) of wheat seeds for the price of 5 kg (11 pounds) thistle seeds 🙂 🙂 🙂 I do like those birds here but not at that price 🙂 I’ll just continue with either sunflower seeds or mixed seeds for my birds.
I walked into the village this morning because at least one of our hunters were out early today and I really didn’t want to disturb the same hunters as I did yesterday again, at least not so close to the first time 🙂 The sun almost showed itself and that was the last time we saw it today I guess. I had a chat with the same villager I always have when I walk that way, he had just gotten a new well. They came and drilled it the other day and it was already connected to the house. Not really drinkable yet because lots of mud was still coming up those pipes.

This is a nothing much will be done day. It isn’t inviting enough to go outside to do anything in the garden, hunters are all over the forest and it’s rather cold because of a weak but nasty wind. So I’ll mostly stay indoors drinking tea and keep the fire burning in my stove. Not bad at all 🙂

We’ve reached 49F here now and my guess is that it’s as high as it will be today. Still, those nasty moose flies never seems to die 🙂
They are so practical! I got them from a friend and I use them all winter. They’ll soon be worn out so I need to go out on the net to find new ones soon 🙂

Christer, I know the type of gloves you are using, and they seem well suited to being out with a camera instead of a rifle to capture wildlife. Enjoyed seeing the fall colors in the trees and sky and still waiting for all that here…possibly mid November is when our crepe myrtles will be colorful. I agree with the advice you left for Mona about her blog and advised her that perhaps starting over would not be so bad. I continue to be stumped on how to get Blogger to allow changes with the new template we selected. Even when we make the choices in the settings, they do not apply to the blog…so frustrating, but we do prefer the new look.

More and more trees are without any leafs now so the few that remains shine the more 🙂
Yes I think it would be good for her to change and start all over again. My problems with Blogger was how it refused to put in photographs. Some days it worked fine, others not at all. I rarely have any problems of any kind here thankfully but it was difficult to understand how this place worked 🙂

I see a lot of frost in those photos. Not looking forward to seeing it here. The nights have been cool but the days have been almost summer-like. My tomato plants are putting forth lots of blossoms and tiny tomatoes. Silly things.
The American goldfinches like thistle seed too. I solved the problem of pricey thistle by letting the thistle plants grow in out of the way parts of my yard. We have always had thistle growing in the lawn at my house. When I was a kid, I thought the first year rosettes were what people meant when they talked about having crab grass in the lawn. When I stepped on the rosette in my bare feet, it bit like a crab. Seemed logical to me. I think I was in my thirties before I learned what real crab grass was.
As for the lantern, I went online and found 4 inch and 5 inch battery operated pillar candles with a memory chip. They fit inside my lanterns very nicely. They flicker like real candles. They come on at the same time every night, burn for 5 hours and turn themselves off. I only have to think about changing the batteries.
The first ones I found were actually made of wax which was a nice idea until they started melting in the summer sun. 🙂 The new ones are plastic but the details of the candle aren’t that visible inside the lanterns so no problem.
There was a partial eclipse of the moon last night. Very partial. It was a tiny nibble out of the moon.

It’s actually more visible on the photographs than it was in real 🙂 I don’t mind frost as long as I don’t have to scrape my car windows 🙂
Tomato plants continue to produce flowers until it dies, in the wild they grow along the ground and produce roots all the way. So unless something kills the entire plant it just continues. The old part can be dead since long 🙂
I don’t know why but we have much less with thistles here now days. We had them everywhere when I moved here and now they’re almost gone. Strange since they use no poison to kill them anywhere here.
I too would have assumed that 🙂 We don’t have crabb grass here though
I normally use graveyard candles. They keep burning for up to seven days if one doesn’t blow them out during the day or before going to bed. No risk with melting when it comes to those 🙂 They are already in a plastic container so it will stay no matter. I’¨ve seen candles like the ones You mention and they are really good but how will the batteries work when it gets really cold? The ones I’ve seen are used indoors where it’s warm and nice all the time.
I wonder if we had that too? Haven’t heard about it and didn’tr see anything either though.

Mine are sold as indoor/outdoor candles. The waxed ones were out there all winter long, shining through the snow and ice. The lanterns have openings to let the heat out and the air in so snow got in there a bit as well. The electronics worked fine up until the very bad heat wave when the wax melted. One of them never recovered but the others are still working. I put them at the back door which is shaded.
The new plastic ones have not had a winter yet but they’ve been rained on and sprayed with the hose when I water the planters.
Graveyard candles sound grim. Leaving a candle burning unattended would be unsafe and worrisome. The paper girl might knock it over and start a fire that would consume my front porch.
Besides, I’d have to remember to replace the candle every week and I’m not good at remembering things like that. 🙂
The chart for the eclipse seemed to indicate that northwestern Europe would have good viewing as the moon would have been higher in the sky when the eclipse started. It began here just at moonrise. I didn’t see it because of clouds.
I’ll start with the graveyard candles 🙂 It’s tradition over here to light a candle on the graves at All Saints Night here. Most of us buy a lantern, a bit smaller than the one I showed in my post, and then it’s safe. People then usually continue to have the candles burning until at least New Years Eve. There are also these candles that has a metallic top that lets in air but keeps snow and rain outside. If these candles should fall they go out directly. I’ve never seen or heard than any of these candles have been dangerous. I need to buy some or find the one I think I have here at home so I can show You. By the way, it is so beautiful looking over greaveyards at night here in winter.
I’ll need to find me some of those electric candles! Sounds very practical especially since they stop shining after five hours by themselves. I would probably have to restart them once every night during the darkest parts of winter here but that’s no problem as long as I can remember to buy batteries 🙂 🙂 🙂
I hope we can get a better eclipse soon again, long time since I saw one.

Trist, men han har ju tur ändå att han kom till oss som visserligen bor mitt i skogen (fast här jagar inte så många för det är en “kohage” bakom oss), men vi har inte några problem med fyrverkerier på nyårsafton i alla fall! 🙂 🙂

Hector har ju blivit skotträdd nu på äldre dar så jag förstår vad du menar. Han är stressad i flera timmar efteråt. Men de skjuter trots allt inte så mycket här så det går. Värre är det när någon får för sig att skjuta raketer här, trots att det är förbjudet. På nyårsnatten skall han då promt ligga innerst i sängen och helst knuffa ut mig också 🙂

I just read this morning about the partial eclipse, very partial. I don’t think one could really tell that there was an eclipse. But there also are a comet and a meteor shower getting ready to happen.
I have to admit that I love your Teo; he looks gentle. I have a soft spot for Bertil too, but I know you always reply as to how bitter and nasty he is! hehe.

It is 🙂 I guess it was the little light we had that made it look so fine on the photos.
I think I know how to adjust that little point and shoot camera so I can get a reasonable photo of Jupiter (or perhaps Mars, it all depends on when the sky gets clear again and when they turn up during the evening and night) but I need to try a lot 🙂 🙂 🙂 Than moon was fantastic. I’ve rarely seen the moon that big and rarely that red before. I wouldn’t have been able to see it from where I live though because the forest woiuld have been in the way.
Yes the comest is on its way and I hope I can see it but every time there’s a meteor shower our sky gets cloudy 🙂 🙂 🙂 I almost always miss them.
TReo is so nice and kind, almost a bit too much and he can drive me crazy by never go away 🙂 🙂 🙂 But Even Bertil can be kind sometimes, usually when he’s sick 🙂
