I sure hope that the breeze we’re having at the moment won’t stop blowing like it did yesterday because today is predicted to be even hotter than it has been. Low humidity though so it could feel much worse. I better enjoy this because it will turn to colder weather next week but we all know how good the weather predictions are, it can stay the same or it can be even warmer 🙂 I’ve already watered what needs to be watered and I’ve also planted some annuals, a few woodland tobacco (nicotiana sylvestris) and another tobacco that we don’t know the name on. Woodland tobacco is my favorite tobacco and the smell is just fantastic. It’s the only tobacco that can grow in shade.
I could see the fog building up while we were walking.
It’s not the right time to plant anything to be honest but they just became too big for their pots, I’ll keep an extra eye on them during the day. This is a day when nothing sees to move outside, the birds don’t even tweet. My dogs are sleeping in the coolest room at the moment but I know that if I should move my feet even the slightest both Nova and Sune would come running, it never seems to be too hot for them to play 🙂
As You all know by now I pay for how much GB I want to use every month when it comes to internet. A sunny and hot vacation seems to increase my use of the net and I had very little data left to use. Easy to fix really, just send a text message to the internet company and they’ll give You more for a small amount of money. That would be easy but if You remember, I couldn’t get an icon for the internet connection but have to go the back way to be connected. I need that icon to be able to send text messages 🙂 So I called the company and they said no problem, we’ll send You a link so You can download the program You need and so they did.
Some roads are only walked on by me and my dogs.
There it was, the icon. Only one tiny problem, it said it couldn’t find any modem? I restarted the laptop but no different result. So I called back to the company and then they explained to me that when I got that extra laptop with extra GB they also changed my subscription, ever so slightly 🙂 It turns out that the modem I now have in my laptop is an extra card for my mobile telephone?! So I only have one subscription instead of two as I had before but it costs less. He couldn’t help me to get the icon work but he also told me that even if he could have I still wouldn’t be able to buy extra GB from the laptop because they had inserted a barrier so if for instance a kid used my laptop and wanted more GB he would have to ask me to do it from my mobile phone. No one should be able to buy extra without me knowing it.
I do understand why they do like this and I really don’t mind it but it would have been nice if they actually had told me this 🙂 I do hope this won’t give me any problems when the new phone that I’ve ordered arrives. It shouldn’t but we all know how these things work, they don’t 🙂 There’s always something that will mess up just because the phone is new or because I have another kind of subscription or just because that’s how life is sometimes 🙂
thankfully I had a few photos left from last week.
I won’t do much today besides breathing and taking the eventual shower but I do need to go to the super market tomorrow to buy some food. I’ll also be checking after a small electric fan (and perhaps a big one too) and a cooling bag made from styrofoam only. Caryn knows what I’m going to do with this and if I find what I want I’ll show You all what I’ve done with it 🙂 So Caryn be quiet and Cindi too if You’ll come here today 🙂 🙂 we are facebook friends and they have seen this too 🙂
Yes it is Wednesday but it is and will get even hotter during the day so I really can’t du much else anyway, so no day of from the blog 🙂 We reached 33C (91,4F) for a short while here yesterday, just before a tiny thunderstorm passed by. It mumbled some and it rained some but I didn’t even get wet on my feet after walking out shortly after it stopped raining 🙂 But it did feel much colder because the temperature dropped to 25C (77F), I actually felt cold for a while 🙂
It looked promising on the way to the bog.
It’s already 27C (80,1F) and it’s not even 12 o’clock yet. We have a few clouds in the sky and I can see that they already are building up to become thunder clouds. This morning however was pretty nice, thick fog and 10C (50F) so I thought a walk to the bog would be nice and perhaps give me a few nice photos. I have to say that I was a bit disappointed when it turned out there was no fog what so ever out there 🙂 So we walked back and I should have stayed near my home because that’s where the fog was all the time 🙂
A bit hazy perhaps but that was it.
But I really can’t ask for better weather during my vacation, this is what we usually wish for but never gets so we really don’t know how hot this is 🙂 and since the humidity is very low right now it is bearable, well at least as long as one doesn’t do anything more than breathe 🙂 I nice breeze has started to blow as well so now it’s kind of nice again. I had one window open all night on the bottom floor (I checked the mosquito net thoroughly) and hoped for the chimney effect, that the hot air upstairs would blow out through the open window in my bedroom, dragging cool air with it on its way out. I’m not sure it worked as I hoped but it was pretty cold downstairs when I woke up this morning 🙂
They had removed those elastic gate wires. I didn’t know that so I have avoided this place for quite some time.
I need to fix some kind of tiny floating jetty for one of the water barrels. This morning I saw a sparrow trying to drink some water from it but the water level is a bit too far down so it almost fell down into it. It happens that they actually falls down and drowns and I really don’t want that. It’s strange that they don’t li,e the bird bath I’ve given them 🙂 It would have been so much more practical if they used that.
It’s time for a pot of tea and to find a place where it is slightly less hot, the livingroom is on the shadowy side of my cottage so I think that’s the best place to be right now. I do have the cool cellar but my dogs don’t want to stay down there for more than a few minutes. In worst case I’ll force them down no matter what they think of it 🙂 but it looks like thunder and hopefully a bit cooler air is on the way.
In my garden. Bladder senna.
Have a great day!
Rudbeckia lacianata, I think. It’s a Rudbeckia in any case 🙂
Kitabelia vitifolia. We call it Balkan mallow.
The Welsh poppy likes to grow together with the Californian one.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ll get thunder later today, it’s already much warmer today than yesterday around this time. The difference is a weak breeze and a slightly higher humidity. Still it’s quite nice but I doubt I’ll do anything more energy-consuming today. But it’s even hotter above the arctic circle today, I’ve heard that they might even reach 32C (89,6F) and that doesn’t happen every summer 🙂 It’s absolutely quiet in the village, a bird is tweeting some but that’s it. It is still too early for the grasshoppers, they usually start their music after noon. I saw the first katydid yesterday and they usually play in the evenings, very loudly from the top of my lilacs and apple trees.
I drove to the grocery store in Gudhem as soon as they opened this morning, I wanted to come home before it became too hot. That little store is usually freezing cold even during summer but today it was nasty warm in there. They had a portable AC unit and I didn’t realize for a very long time that it actually was working 🙂 🙂 I had to put my hand in front of it to feel the cold air. It is way to small for a grocery store and I doubt that it helps keeping the entrance doors open at the same time 🙂
I found some tiny tomatoes on one of my tomato plants this morning 🙂 I hadn’t seen them before because they were covered by all the leafs on that little bush 🙂 Do You know that You can remove most leafs from a tomato plant and just leave some at the top of it? The leafs only evaporates water and it isn’t that fun to keep watering all day, also if You cover the soil with for instance cut grass the soil will keep the moisture so much better and also reducing the watering we need to do. I also finally found lots of female flowers on my pumpkin vines, I guess pumpkins, like zucchini can be eaten long before they ripe so I at least will have some use of the eventual pumpkins I might get 🙂
Nova is sleeping on the kitchen stairs, in the frying sunlight. I wonder if that’s especially healthy? The others are all sleeping either in the shadow or in the cottage. I Think both cats are sleeping upstairs, I know they came in after I came home from the grocery store and I haven’t seen them leaving. This is just how summer should be, we need it to cope through a long and dark winter. Well, it got too hot even for Nova 🙂 she’s now here in the kitchen by my feet instead.
Californian poppies never disappoints me and they tend to self sow for a couple of years too.
Hyssopus officinalis, a good alternative for places where lavender won’t grow.
Can’t remember what this one is called. Likes swampy places if it grows in full sunshine.
I’ve just finished the box of strawberries I bought and now it’s time for some tea or perhaps I should surprise myself with some coffee instead 🙂 Through the open kitchen door I can see clouds above the mountain building up to become thunder clouds. I think I’ll join all the animals and take a nap too.
calceolaria mexicana, the flower is still not fully grown though.
Illiamna remota. The flowers are very pale this year, almost white. Normally they are more pink.
I had planned to go to a bigger town this morning but it is going to be really hot today and it’s already so warm that I don’t want to leave the dogs in the dogyard. Nova will go in to the old garage and Sune will probably stay in the doghouse but the old ones will most likely stay outdoors and that will be just too hot today. It’s one thing if I had to go to work but another if I actually don’t have to go anywhere. I’ll go either tomorrow or on Wednesday and I’ll bring my camera too, the town is rather nice looking.
I could see fog when I opened the door for the dogs this early morning and thought a walk to the bog would give me nice photos. I did get some foggy photos but it turned out that the fog stayed much longer in the village today 🙂 Well one can’t be successful in every choice one makes 🙂 Birds were actually singing in the forest today, unlike how it has been here the last week or so. I guess they liked the morning as much as I did. There were also some mosquitos now so I guess some of them survived the draught after all. But this was the old kind that sort of circles around the head a million times before they decide it’s safe to go down, the other kind we’ve had for a few years are still absent thankfully. We call them Flood mosquitos and they are fairly new to this area. They don’t circle at all, they just land and start drink our blood. I do prefer the old kind 🙂
I didn’t sleep especially well during the night, the cottage was just too hot. So one of the things I’ll buy in the big town is a fan, at least it will stir the air some. No use in buying an AC since it still is very rare we get it this hot. But since they say the climate is getting warmer and warmer I might need to buy an AC in the future. Lots of plants have died here after two warm winters and the ones surviving those died when we had that late heavy frost. I have plenty of space to fill in my flower beds next year, at the moment weeds and grass grow there instead.
I happened to take two photos at the same time by accident and the first one showed a thin foggy line that went across the photo that didn’t show in the next one (that I posted in my NG album). Next photo show a closer look to it but it is hard to see. I can only assume that it i something mythical and magical flying pass since it is taken by a bog 🙂 Do You have any guess to why this thin line shows?
I thought at first it might be a spider web but can’t see any in the first photo. It probably is but it’s funnier to think it’s something mythical 🙂
They had predicted some showers here later today but now it seems that we’ll get sunshine all day instead. I don’t mind because that will most likely keep the humidity on bearable levels but it does mean I’ll have to water in the garden. Some places are like a desert out there, doesn’t matter how much I water, the ground will dry out after just a few minutes. Other places never dry out and I guess that’s where the ground water comes up close to the surface. I’ll only water the things I absolutely want to survive, if the rest survives they’ve shown they’ll manage to survive here 🙂
It’s time to make some breakfast, I already have a cup of tea by my side. Today I really need to make some dinner, long time since I did that 🙂 I can’t say I enjoy standing in front of a hot stove on hot summer days. I know I can always use my slow cooker but the things I have just takes a short time to cook anyway. I have some lamb, reindeer, pork and moose in my freezer so it will either be something of that or pancakes 🙂
A dragonfly (or troll spindle) landed on my t-shirt yesterday, I was looking out through the mosquito net and had to take a photo.
We’re having another rather wonderful day here by the bog. The sun is shining, the breeze is breezing and it’s just enough warm. Perhaps the humidity is a bit high but not so much that it feels awful. We went out for our walk just as the sun rose and I had hoped for fog since they had predicted it but no such luck I’m afraid. But it was cool and fairly fly free so I’m happy anyway. I couldn’t hear a single bird sing, just the all year round tweeting and I don’t count that as singing, it’s more like small talk to be honest.
The clouds were building up to be thunder clouds yesterday (and today as well) but nothing happened here.
I’m not the one doing things in a hurry when I have things to do and my plans are often five-year plans 🙂 Today however it almost seemed like I was in a hurry since I finally picked away all those tree trunks and branches from the plum tree, apple tree and lilacs I cut down two years ago 🙂 or is it three? I had however placed every little bit in a nice woodpile so it didn’t look bad. But I had placed it all on the gravel path that goes around one side of my cottage. I really don’t care about the gravel path but it was a bit hard to mow the lawn around the pile. Most of the smaller pieces had dried out really well but the bigger ones was still heavy of water. It’s my own fault since I never removed the bark from those trunks, it’s a must if one want big pieces to dry up at all.
Cool and nice this morning and I could see lots of spider webs.
I piled it all in my wood shed and wondered if I should chop it up today but I have big windows standing there in the wood shed and sometimes those wood logs jump away with surprising speed and always in to something that can break 🙂 So I’ll leave that to another day. Now I have firewood for at least five or six days 🙂 It’s amazing that two big trees and lots of lilacs don’t give more firewood, I mean the trees were rather big to be honest. Well, lots of it was chopped up to wood chips and placed around the pond to be honest. I need to buy a new wood chipper till next time because the one I have was starting to give up last time I used it 🙂
The dogs are sleeping and I’m thinking of joining them in a nap, that would be my second for the day 🙂 Still, I have absolutely no problems falling asleep in the evening at the same time I always do. But first I’ll have a pot of tea and some ic cream.
We’re having a pretty wonderful day here, the sun is shining, some clouds pass beneath the sun every now and again and it’s around 25C (77F). almost no wind and the flies seems to stay mostly in the shadows. They didn’t however when I mowed the lawn. Most of them just swarmed around my head but there were a few deer flies and horse flies that gave me some bites. Strangely enough I can’t feel any itching which I usually do for hours and no swelling either so I guess they just made some trial runs 🙂
It’s almost possible to see the rainbow in that fog.
After that I did my laundry so now I’ve done my chores for the day. Before the mowing and washing I did go to the store in Gudhem to buy the things I, despite a long list, missed to buy yesterday. I didn’t only buy those things, I also bought lots of ice cream of my favorite brand, Klings ice cream. Some strawberries and grapes also followed me home so after the mowing and washing I had two big bowls of ice cream with strawberries. Life feels good days like these 🙂
The morning however was a bit chilly, we could see our breaths 🙂 No frost though and I do hope it’ll stay away until the first week in September as it usually does or even later. I heard one bird singing the entire morning and most are still rather quiet. Some sparrows tweet but that’s it. Bertil tried to catch a magpie yesterday and I could hear how the bird laughed out loud 🙂 Teodor is the bird catcher but he’s smart enough to stay away from magpies. My old Erna however managed to catch one and the magpies stayed away from my garden for years after that.
We have lots of butterflies and dragonflies here now, most of them refuse to sit still long enough to get photographed though, one just landed and a drying t-shirt and I got a photo that I’ll show You tomorrow, The Swedish name on dragonflies has nothing to do with dragons but another mythical being, the troll. It’s called Troll spindle here, I’m not sure why though so I’ll try to find out why. Just found it out, they were actually believed to be trolls spindles. Before christianity they were closely associated with the goddess Freya. After christianity arrived they started to look more suspiciously at them and the dragonfly was often connected with the devil or mythical beings like dragons, troll or witches.
It was so chilly tat we could see our breaths.
The laundry is dry and I better bring it in before any sparrows do their business on it 🙂 All the animals are asleep and I think I’ll join them by taking a small nap, perhaps I’ll have a cup of tea and some more ice cream before though 🙂
Finally it grows! This one should be at least a meter long now (a yard) but the cold nights have slowed it down.
Todays photos will be a mix from what I’ve been photographing this last week.
A week passes quickly and what have I done during these days, absolutely nothing 🙂 The rains we had seems to have started a second wave of forest flies, not as many as the first wave but still enough to make me feel slightly insane while taking our walks during the day. It’s only in the very early morning that they keep calm. We also have plenty of horse flies and deer flies at the moment and they do have a nice bite 🙂 The cows have moved from the pasture just outside my garden so the biting devils aren’t as bad here as in the forest though. I have a really effective spray that they seems to hate that I can use, the problem is that I get eczema when I use it.
The tick season has sort of restarted as well but the spray I got for the dogs works pretty well. At least for a few days, it wears of fast especially since both Orvar and Sune have a tendency to walk in high dew wet grass and Sune just can’t stay away from any smelly puddle he can find 🙂 So this morning I removed 10! ticks from Orvar, well 14 actually but four was tiny males that don’t drink blood. The rest of the dogs had one in total and it was actually Nova that had it. So later today I’ll spray them all again, even the flies seems to dislike that spray so they hover over the dogs but don’t land on them.
The mosquito nets on the doors are working fine as long as none of the dogs tear them down as soon as they need to run in and out of the cottage 🙂 So I’ve had plenty of flies here and used lots of sticky fly paper. But I got tired of it and nailed those nets to the door frame instead 🙂 Almost ny new fly has entered my home since I did that 🙂 A few butterflies have though and I’ve managed to save them from spider webs and let them out again. They were too big for the spiders and they just didn’t bother to even try to save their webs when the butterflies destroyed them while trying to escape.
All my tomato plants finally flowers and the pumpkins grow really fast, they still only have buds and from the look of them still only male ones. Well I won’t get any pumpkin anyway so it doesn’t matter 🙂 Everything finally grows in my garden, the nights are not that cold any longer. The only thing that doesn’t grow are the three walnut trees I sowed last winter. Some pest attacked their leafs so they dropped them but no new ones grow out instead. They just stand there as small sticks with leaf buds 🙂 My Black Walnut however grows fine, the competition with the Musk mallow seems to be just what it needed 🙂
There’s almost no bird song any longer, they have all quieted down and are now concentrating in catching food for their young ones. The eventual blackbird still sings but from now on it will be only the usual twittering we’ll hear. Autumn is still far away but we all feel it coming closer and are preparing for it. Still, next week will be almost as hot as it was before this cooler period arrived. The last week has mostly been cloudy with some rain and fairly strong winds, I have to admit that it has been rather wonderful 🙂
We’ve walked our morning walk and I’ve already been to the super market to get what I need for the weekend and even if I had a list with me I still managed to miss a few things that I wanted 🙂 🙂 🙂 So I might need to go to the store in Gudhem already tomorrow but for today I’m fine. It’s time for a pot of tea and then I might take a nap.
